Real sandblasted glass looks beautiful and costs a fortune — and once it is etched, it is permanent. Frosted film gives you the same elegant, translucent, etched-glass look as a self-adhesive vinyl: a fraction of the price, fitted in an afternoon, and removable when you rebrand or move out. This guide covers where it works, how to design it, and how it compares to the other window options. It is part of our custom stickers & decals guide.

What frosted film is and does

Frosted (or "etched-glass") film is a translucent vinyl with a fine, sandblasted texture. Light passes through, but you cannot see clearly through it — so it does two jobs:

  • Privacy — obscures the view while keeping the space bright. Perfect for meeting rooms, clinics, bathrooms and lower window panels.
  • Branding — cut a logo, pattern or band out of the frost so your mark appears in elegant etched glass.

It is the go-to for a premium, understated look where solid colour vinyl would feel heavy. The frosted sticker is the option to start from.

Where to use it

  • Glass office partitions — a frosted band at sitting-eye height gives privacy and stops people walking into the glass, while the room stays open and bright.
  • Meeting rooms — full or partial frost for confidentiality without blacking out the room.
  • Clinic and salon windows — privacy at street level, light above.
  • Glass doors — a frosted logo or a safety band (required so people see the door).
  • Retail lower panels — frost the bottom third for a tidy look while the upper window stays clear for display.

Frosted vs one-way vision vs solid vinyl

These three solve different window problems — pick by what you need:

Frosted is about diffusing the view, not advertising. If you want to print a full-colour graphic that people read from the street, that is one-way vision or solid vinyl, not frost.

Design options

Frosted film is more flexible than people expect:

  • Full frost — a whole panel obscured for maximum privacy.
  • Cut-out logo / text — the frost is cut away so your logo reads as clear glass against the frosted background (or the reverse).
  • Bands and patterns — a horizontal frosted band, dots, gradients or a custom motif at eye height.
  • Printed frost — some films accept a printed colour graphic on the frosted base, combining privacy with a subtle brand colour.

For cut-out logos, supply vector artwork with a clear cut path — see print-ready file setup. Keep text reasonably bold so the cut edges stay crisp.

Fitting and care

Frosted film is applied wet, like other window films: clean the glass, mist with soapy water, position, squeegee out from the centre, and trim to the frame. It removes cleanly later — one of its big advantages over permanent etching or sandblasting. Clean it with a soft damp cloth; avoid abrasive pads that can mark the texture.

What frosted film costs and how it's measured

Frosted film is priced by area, so the cost follows how much glass you cover. A frosted band across a partition is inexpensive; frosting full floor-to-ceiling office glass is a larger job, but the per-square-foot rate improves with quantity. A few measuring tips:

  • Measure the visible glass and order to that size plus a small allowance to tuck into the frame.
  • A privacy band is cheaper than full frost and often does the job — a 30–40 cm band at sitting-eye height gives privacy and a safety marker while leaving light above and below.
  • Cut-out logos add a little setup for the cutting path but very little material; they are an affordable way to brand a glass door or reception.
  • Plan partitions as repeatable panels so a future office reconfiguration can reuse the same sizes.

Send your panel or window dimensions to request a quote, or start from the frosted sticker option. Because it removes cleanly, frosted film is also a smart choice for rented offices — you brand the space now and take it down without damaging the glass when you move.

Is frosted film right for you?

Choose frosted film when you want privacy and a high-end etched look while keeping a space light — offices, clinics, glass doors and partitions. For advertising, look at one-way vision; for bold opaque graphics, solid vinyl. Many fit-outs use frost for partitions and a solid vinyl logo on the door.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see through frosted film? No — it diffuses the view to shapes and shadows. That is the point. Light still passes through.

Is it removable? Yes — unlike sandblasted glass, frosted film peels off cleanly, so it suits rented and changing spaces.

Can I put my logo in it? Yes — cut the logo out of the frost (or frost only the logo) for an etched-glass effect. Supply vector artwork.

Does it need a safety band on doors? A frosted band on a glass door helps people see the door is there — a sensible safety practice and often a requirement.
